Dwelling in Possibility - Reflection for December 12, 2014

posted Jan 30, 2015, 11:18 AM by Parish Administrator

December 10th is the anniversary of the death of two people who have, by their work, influenced my life and my faith -- Karl Barth and Thomas Merton -- and the anniversary of the birth of another,Emily Dickenson.  I celebrate today their having lived among us, and I thank God for their gifts and the way they shared them with us all.

Emily Dickinson, "I dwell in Possibility" from The Poems of Emily Dickinson. Edited by R. W. Franklin(Harvard University Press, 1999).

I dwell in Possibility -

A fairer House than Prose -

More numerous of Windows -

Superior - for Doors -

Of Chambers as the Cedars -

Impregnable of eye -

And for an everlasting Roof

The Gambrels of the Sky -

Of Visitors - the fairest -

For Occupation - This -

The spreading wide my narrow Hands

To gather Paradise -
